Recognizing the Signs of Human Trafficking
The National Human Trafficking Hotline provides a list of warning signs and indicators to help identify potential cases of human trafficking. Below are some common red flags to look out for:
Work and Living Conditions
- The individual is not free to leave or move about as they wish.
- Works in the commercial sex trade under the control of a pimp or manager.
- Receives little or no pay, or is compensated only with tips.
- Owes a significant debt and cannot pay it off.
- Was recruited under false pretenses regarding the nature or conditions of the job.
- The workplace or living area has unusual security measures, such as boarded or barred windows, barbed wire, opaque glass, or constant surveillance.
Lack of Control
- Possesses few or no personal belongings.
- Does not control their own money, financial records, or bank account.
- Is denied access to identification documents such as an ID or passport.
- Is unable to speak freely, or is accompanied by someone who insists on translating or answering on their behalf.
